New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will miss the rest of the season after he undergoes surgery on his left knee, Giants coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday.
While Harbaugh said Dart will miss the regular season, he did leave open the possibility of his coming back for the playoffs.
Dart, who is in his second season, sustained the injury in the first quarter of the Giants’ 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday. Dart was attempting a pass on third-and-8 when he was sandwiched between multiple defenders, and a Rams linebacker collided with his left knee.
Dart, 23, was the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. He began his rookie season as a backup to Russell Wilson but became New York’s starter after an 0-3 start to the season.
In 14 games and 12 starts during his rookie season, Dart completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,272 yards, throwing 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran for 487 yards and nine scores.
Dart’s aggressive style of play has been a concern at times. He missed two games during his first year because of a concussion and was subjected to several other concussion checks throughout the season.
In his first game back after the head injury, Dart was running when he was subjected to a big hit in a game against the New England Patriots.
“No, look, I understand the question, but this is football,” Dart said in December when he was asked whether he would change his style of play to be more conservative. “I’m going to get hit if I’m in the pocket or outside the pocket. I feel like I played this way my whole entire life. It shouldn’t be any shocker to anybody if you followed along with my career.”
He added: “We’re not playing soccer out here. You’re going to get hit. Things happen. It’s just part of the game.”
Veteran Jameis Winston, the No. 1 overall pick in 2015, played in relief of Dart in the loss to Los Angeles. In three games last season, Winston completed 56.1% of his passes for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Other than Winston, the Giants have no other quarterbacks on their depth chart. Former fourth-round pick Jake Haener, who made his only career start in 2024, is on the team’s practice squad. New York’s next game is at home against the 0-2 Tennessee Titans.
