“I wanna be a lifer with Golden State.”
Stephen Curry has consistently said he doesn’t want to play for any other franchise than the Golden State Warriors. Friday night he signed on the bottom line to make that happen.
Curry and the Warriors have agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension, which the Warriors announced, with ESPN’s Shams Charania providing the financial details.

“We couldn’t be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors,” Golden State General Manager Mike Dunleavy said in a statement. “Personally, I don’t think there has ever been a better face to a franchise in professional sports history, both on and off the court, than Stephen Curry with the Warriors.”
The extension kicks in for the 2027-28 season and includes a player option in the second year. If he plays both years of the contract, it will take Curry through his 20th season in the NBA and age 41. If he plays both years, this contract also will make Curry the first player in NBA history to earn more than $600 million in salary.
Curry also gave the Warriors a financial break with this deal, as it is $20 million below the max he could have signed for — and the Warriors would have given him. Curry is still the guy who packs the building, brings in sponsors, sells jerseys, and gets the Warriors on national television. A lot. That discount is in part to help the Warriors build a contender around him, something he talked about today on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio channel.
“You could ask me, you could ask Steve Kerr, you could ask Draymond (Green), we still believe that we can be that team. I think our challenge now is to reimagine what that looks like. And, you know, we have a veteran team. We need health on our side.”
Curry only played 43 games last season himself, and him staying on the court is going to be key to any hope the Warriors make a run — he still shoots and plays at a high level.
Curry also talked in that interview about understanding he is in the final stretch of his career.
“Oh, I’m close to it. Look, Father Time is undefeated. We know that. And there’s an idea of how far can I push this high level of play that I got, what expectations I have for myself.”
When the end of his career comes, it’s going to be in Golden State. As it should be.
