Ramadan begins, death on Gaza border, humpback whales go fishing and more.

Breaking the fast
A group breaks their fast on the first day of Ramadan in Istanbul on May 16. The month of Ramadan centers on dawn-to-dusk fasting, in which food and even a sip of water is prohibited, with the intention of bringing the faithful closer to God and remind them of those less fortunate.
Just as the sun begins to set, Muslims traditionally break their fast as the Prophet Muhammad did some 1,400 years ago, by eating sweet dates and drinking water, followed by a sunset prayer.

Feeding frenzy
A gull stands on the rostrum of a feeding humpback whale hoping to snatch an extra sand eel in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary near Gloucester, Massachusetts, on May 10. The humpbacks were feeding using the bubble net method to trap the eels and then swimming up through it with their mouths open.

Bloody day in Gaza
A wounded Palestinian demonstrator is evacuated as others take cover from Israeli fire and tear gas during a protest at the Israeli-Gaza border on May 14.
Israeli forces shot and killed 59 people and injured more than 2,700 during mass protests Monday along the Gaza border, while just a few miles away Israel and the U.S. held a festive inauguration ceremony for the new American Embassy in contested Jerusalem. It was by far the bloodiest day of cross-border violence since a 2014 war between Hamas and Israel.

Baby lost
A mother holds the body of her daughter, Leyla al-Ghandour, at the morgue of the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City on May 15. The 8-month-old inhaled tear gas during mass protests on the Gaza border with Israel. "Let her stay with me. It is too early for her to go," her mother cried, pressing the baby's body to her chest.

Open tear
Lava erupts from a fissure east of the Leilani Estates subdivision during ongoing eruptions of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii on May 13.
Most of the lava outbreaks have occurred in and around the Leilani Estates neighborhood, where molten rock has burst through the ground, destroying more than two dozen homes and resulting in evacuation orders for nearly 2,000 people.

West Bank protest
Palestinians run away from tear gas shot at them by Israeli forces during a protest in the West Bank city of Ramallah on May 15. Tuesday marked the 70th anniversary of what Palestinians call their "nakba," or catastrophe -- the uprooting of hundreds of thousands in the Mideast war over Israel's 1948 creation.
