Unseasonably hot temperatures combined with dry conditions have transformed the boreal forest in much of Alberta into a tinder box.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump arrive to speak to supporters at Trump Tower in Manhattan following his victory in the Indiana primary on May 3 in New York City. Trump beat rival Ted Cruz decisively in a contest that many analysts believe was the last chance for any other Republican candidate to catch Trump in the delegate count. Trump is now the Republican presumptive nominee after Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich suspended their campaigns.

A family embraces at the U.S.-Mexico border fence during a "Opening the Door of Hope" event on April 30 in San Diego, California. Five families, with some members living in Mexico and others in the United States, were permitted to meet and embrace for three minutes each at a door in the fence, which the U.S. Border Patrol opened to celebrate Mexican Children's Day. It was only the third time the fence, which separates San Diego from Tijuana, had been opened for families to briefly reunite. The event was planned by the immigrant advocacy group Border Angels.

The curtain fell a final time for elephants performing at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as the circus ended a practice that enthralled audiences for two centuries but became caught between animal rights activists' concerns and Americans' shifting views.

A total of 33 former circus Lions, 22 males and 11 females, from Peru and Columbia were airlifted to South Africa to live out their lives on a private reserve in the Limpopo Province. Twenty-four of the animals were rescued in raids on circuses operating in Peru, with the rest voluntarily surrendered by a circus in Colombia after the country's congress passed a bill prohibiting circuses from using wild animals. The trip was coordinated by the animal rights group 'Animal Defenders International'.

President Barack Obama drops the mic as he wraps up his routine of sharp-tongued comedy at the White House Correspondents' Dinner for the last time — wrapping up with "Obama out" while the crowd cheered on April 30.

Obama drew plenty of laughs with his barbed remarks to a ballroom filled with journalists, politicians, and movie and television stars. It was his eighth appearance at the event and his last as president and he kidded about the pains of being a lame duck.
