Truck Bomb Shakes Kabul's Diplomatic Quarter

Smoke and debris fills the streets in front of the German Embassy in Kabul after a rush-hour suicide bomb hidden in a sewage truck killed least 80 people and wounded more than 300 others early on May 31.

The neighborhood is considered Kabul's safest area, with foreign embassies protected by dozens of 10-foot-high blast walls and government offices, guarded by police and national security forces.

It was one of the worst attacks Kabul had seen since the drawdown of foreign forces from the country at the end of 2014. The explosion also raised serious questions about the Afghan government's ability to secure the war-battered nation.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast. Both the Taliban and ISIS have staged large-scale attacks in Kabul in the past but the Taliban issued a statement denying any involvement.
