Women around the globe took part in some of the largest-ever International Women's Day protests.

"A Day Without a Woman," also deemed the Women's Strike, encourages participants to skip work or school and avoid purchasing anything in stores or online to show just how critical a role women play in society.

A woman strikes a pose in front of the "Fearless Girl" statue on March 8. The girl faces Manhattan's well-known bronze charging bull, as if to fearlessly stare it down.
An investment firm, State Street Global Advisors, erected the statue ahead of International Women's Day.
