It happens to the best of us — you order something during Prime Day, but when it arrives, it doesn’t fit, isn’t the right color or you just don’t love it as much as you thought you would. Thankfully, you’re not stuck with what you bought. In most cases, Prime Day purchases are returnable and refundable. Below, I break down Amazon’s return policy, including what you can and can’t send back, and how long you typically have to decide if you’re keeping something.

Can you return items bought on Prime Day?

Yes, you can return most items you buy on Prime Day. Amazon doesn’t have a Prime Day-specific return policy. As long as your product isn’t one that can’t be returned, like anything that’s listed as final sale, perishables, Amazon pharmacy products, pet medication and customized items, you can send it back within the specified time period and get your money back.

What’s Amazon’s return policy?

You can return most Amazon purchases within 30 days of delivery as long as they’re in original or unused condition. There are a few exceptions — for example, Apple products only have a 15-day return window (yes, that includes the AirPods or Apple Watch you just ordered). You’ll get your refund when Amazon (or the third-party seller) receives and processes the item, which can take up to 30 days, according to the retailer.

If a third-party seller fulfills and ships its own products, and those products are eligible for Prime delivery, they fall under Amazon’s standard return policy. If not, Amazon requires the seller to either offer a U.S. return address you can ship the item to, a prepaid return label or a full refund without requiring you to send the item back.

To prevent any return hiccups, make sure you hover over the area where it says “returns” on a product’s page. Doing so tells you what the return policy is for that specific item, ensuring that there are no surprises after you checkout.

What can’t you return on Amazon?

There are a handful of non-returnable items on Amazon, including those marked “final sale.” Here are a few worth knowing about — you can read about all non-returnable items here.

  • Hazardous materials, including flammable liquids and gas
  • Most gift cards and prepaid game cards
  • Perishable products, like groceries and pet food
  • Some jewelry and personal care items
  • Customized products
  • Collectibles like Funko Pop figures and Trading Card games

I’m a reporter for NBC Select who has covered Amazon Prime Day since 2020. In addition to writing about the best deals, I also wrote about what’s included in a Prime membership, the history of Prime Day and what to buy and skip this year. Prior to Amazon’s flagship sale, I researched the retailer’s return policy and reviewed online resources about Prime Day returns.
