Geologists investigated for NOT predicting a quake?

Earth Magazine reports that seven Italian earthquake experts may be charged with gross negligent manslaughter because they failed to foresee the fatal L'Aquila earthquake of 2009. The experts reportedly told officials in March 2009 that a series of minor quakes didn't mean that a bigger shaker was imminent. Unfortunately, a 6.3 earthquake occurred less than a week later, and more than 300 people were killed. Lots of researchers have talked about the possibility of predicting earthquakes seconds before they occur. But days? As Earth's Megan Sever says, "God help us if this is the new standard."
