The late night hosts' overwhelming sentiment about the Iowa caucuses seemed to be ... boredom.
"Live!" host Jimmy Kimmel admitted he missed most of it, no doubt having better things to do. But for someone who didn't really pay attention, Kimmel sure had a lot to say.
He joked that a bottle of ketchup and Snooki from "Jersey Shore" both out-performed Jon Huntsman, who came in dead last. He pointed out Rick Santorum's various sweater vests and revealed a clip of Newt Gingrich in a way-too-tight replica. And then he joked that Santorum was that "boring, stuck up white guy in every Tyler Perry movie."
The popular target was the Bachmann family at Michele Bachmann's concession speech. "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart and Kimmel both took jabs at Marcus Bachmann, poking fun at her anecdote about her husband's experience buying doggie sunglasses for their pooch.
But before leaving the topic for dead, Kimmel decided to laugh at the media with a montage of the many times it used the word "horserace" to describe what was going on.
"Late Show" host David Letterman invited NBC's own Brian Williams onto his show, and the two toyed with network competitiveness and Regis Philbin impressions of all things. Letterman made the newsman explain what influence Iowa actually has on anything, and Williams responded with an impressive sports analogy.
(And of course, Williams had to re-live the fire alarm guffaw of the year before he was allowed to leave the couch.)
Steven Colbert of "The Colbert Report" wanted to see bloodshed -- or at least a really good cinematic fight between Gingrich and Romney. He tried to fuel the fires of competition with a horror movie play-by-play of sorts, and warned Romney that his one mistake was "leaving Gingrich alive." He also spent a lot of time ridiculing the media for our inability to count, use technology or make much sense at all that late into the evening.
Lucky for us, we have several more caucuses, primaries and late-night elections to screw up.
