Lena Dunham was hospitalized Saturday morning and will undergo surgery for a ruptured ovarian cyst, said a spokeswoman for the "Girls" creator and star.
"Lena Dunham has been very public with her personal bouts with endometriosis. This morning, she suffered from an ovarian cyst rupture and has been taken to the hospital," Cindi Berger, Dunham's spokeswoman, said in a statement to NBC News.
Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful disease that occurs when tissue that lines the uterus is found outside the uterus.
Dunham, 29, said in a post on Facebook last month that she was "going through a rough patch with the illness" and wouldn't be "out and about doing press for the new season" of "Girls," which aired Feb. 21 on HBO.

"So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted," Dunham wrote.
Berger said Dunham is undergoing surgery at an undisclosed hospital.
"We thank you for you understanding and hope that Lena’s privacy will be respected," she said.
