Superhero meets ultra-hunk in Disney’s blockbuster action film, "The Avengers," and the good news is both men and women will have lots to gape over when the big screen comic thriller opens Friday.
For the theatrical adaptation of Marvel’s original work, director Joss Whedon recruited not only the greatest crusaders ever to fight off the obscure forces of other-worldly evil, he also assembled the most handsome cast in Hollywood, reeling in Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson to portray the team of heroes. The story takes on good versus evil with varying arches of gray, and the actors embody their multi-dimensional roles not only with sincerity, but lots of va-va-voom.
Beginning after alien-like forces break into the atmosphere, "The Avengers" has Iron Man (Downey) joining forces with The Hulk (Ruffalo), Thor (Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Renner), Black Widow (Johansson) and Captain America (Evans) to thwart the creatures’ conniving affiliate Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in his mission to take over Earth. Loki rises to power through his illustrious blue Tesseract, an energy source that opens the sky to an evil realm in space. It’s, thus, an all-or-nothing battle pitting him and his mercurial monsters against the avengers to control the strange source of terror.
Though not without some internal bickering (‘too many cooks in the kitchen,’ needless to say), each avenger manages to compliment his counterpart in the battlefield, from the speed, strength and savvy thinking of Iron Man to the raging fortitude of the Hulk, who arguably steals the show.
Furthermore, there’s sex appeal to satiate every gawker’s taste, whether it’s the musky, Australian brawn of Hemsworth; the clean-cut all-American classic of Evans; the geeky, disheveled charm of Ruffalo; or the sophisticated, sardonic wit of Downey. Even Hiddleston, as the exiled Nordic god, provides a brooding edge that taps into that whole bad boy scenario for those who prefer the dark side of masculinity. No matter what the intrigue, female audiences around the world will have their fill of lascivious amore.
And, of course, one of every man’s favorite femme fatales also gets her share of the big screen. Reprising her vixen-like role, Johansson learned “Wushu style” combat for the return of Black Widow, and can be seen flipping, kicking, and sharpshooting her lithe frame out of every dilemma in which she finds herself. She also seductively speaks in Russian, in a way only possible for the actress. Dark, sleek and sophisticated, the starlet stops nothing short of alluring.
Last but not least, Samuel L. Jackson brings his cool demeanor to the movie, as espionage agency chief Nick Fury – the man with the plan – employing the team of superstars to conquer iniquity. Eye-patch and all, Jackson adds a mature, polished component to the narrative.
There are many reasons to see “The Avengers,” but, if nothing else, go to enjoy the eye candy along with some Raisinets. The film not only lives up to expectations as a spectacular, dynamic blockbuster, it’s also the perfect score for date night.
