Reality star Cristina Sanz has died after a sudden cardiac arrest, her family announced. She was 36.
Sanz was a cast member on A&E’s “Born This Way,” a three-time Emmy-winning series that followed adults with Down syndrome.
The show followed Sanz and others “as they pursue their passions and lifelong dreams, explore friendships, romantic relationships and work, all while defying society’s expectations,” according to A&E.
Sanz’s parents, Mariano and Beatriz, announced her death Wednesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our daughter, Cristina, passed away Monday morning,” the couple posted on Cristina Sanz’s Instagram account. “She suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while at her Day Program and was rushed to the hospital.”
According to the statement, doctors’ best attempts to stabilize Sanz’s heart were unsuccessful. Her parents said they were “grateful” to be at her side in her last moments.
“Her death was a total shock and unexpected. We will forever treasure the gift of her life.”
Sanz starred in all four seasons of the critically acclaimed series “Born This Way.” Her storylines followed her career goals and romance with Angel Callahan. The pair were married in 2018 but split in 2021, citing Covid-related isolation as a stressor on their relationship.
In a statement to People, A&E offered condolences to the Sanz family.
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Cristina Sanz, who touched the hearts of many through her time on ‘Born This Way,’” it said. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.”
