Coldplay frontman Chris Martin proved his commitment to his fans last weekend.
Saundra Glenn, a 64-year-old from Luton, England, tells TODAY.com that she had been trying to use the accessibility entrance at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend due to her osteoarthritis and joint issues when she was met with long lines and several obstacles May 26.
Glenn says she was “struggling to walk” and ultimately decided to watch Coldplay from home due to her condition. That’s when Martin’s car pulled up and a woman offered her a ride, Glenn says.
“The door was automated, and there was Chris Martin sitting there,” Glenn says. “And I recognized him from feet away and I said, ‘Oh, that’s Chris Martin! I can’t get in a car with him!’ He said, ‘Yes, you can come on in.’”
During their ride into the venue, Glenn says they discussed her advocacy work in Luton, Martin’s performance, aging and relationships, among other topics.
The 64-year-old later shared a selfie of her and Martin in the backseat of the car to X, which sent his fan base abuzz due to her tweet seemingly referring to the singer’s relationship status.
“That moment when Chris Martin @Coldplay saw me struggling to walk, had his car stop and gave me a lift,” she wrote. “Blooming amazing. Can’t believe this happened.”
“What a decent bloke. We had a nice chat too. He is single and likes #Luton,” she added of Martin, who’s been romantically linked to Dakota Johnson since 2017.
On social media, fans questioned whether the tweet suggested Martin and Johnson ended their relationship. However, Glenn clarified the remark to TODAY.com.
“I looked at him and said, ‘You’ve got a French wife,’ and he said, ‘I haven’t.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you got a French wife. I read it in the papers. I don’t know, I must be having a senior moment. I thought you had a French wife.’ He said, ‘No, I’m single,’” Glenn says of their conversation.
“When he said he was single, it was just because he was answering my question,” she adds.
After their ride, Glenn says the two went their separate ways — he to the stage to headline the festival, and she to watch from the audience. She noted, though, that Martin instructed his team to ensure she was dropped off where she needed to be.
“(Martin’s team) said, ‘Oh, yes, sure. We’ll take care of it.’ And they said, ‘Come into this buggy,’” Glenn says. “And the golf buggy said ‘artist’ on the front.”
Glenn describes Martin as down-to-earth, empathetic and says being a celebrity “hasn’t gone to his head.” She says she hopes the story leads more people to choose acts of kindness.
“This is what I think is heartwarming. It’s lovely. And if more people want to do more of that kind of thing, to me, it’s just a good thing because happiness makes you smile. There’s a little joy,” she says, adding her newly-coined hashtag, “#BeMoreLikeChrisMartin.”
