Christopher Anne Affleck, mother of actors Ben and Casey Affleck, died in June after a monthslong battle with a terminal illness, the family announced July 23. She was 82.
Affleck, a civil rights organizer and teacher, received her diagnosis in December 2025 and was given six months to live, according to her obituary in The Boston Globe. She passed just after being able to witness one of her biggest ambitions, according to the family.
“Her greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school,” the family wrote in the obituary. “She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026. She died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later.”
Affleck, who was born in New York City in 1942, spent 35 years as a public school teacher in Massachusetts, the obituary said.
“Every student, whether just arrived from Haiti or Cambridge upper crust, was a cherished citizen of her classroom republic, equal to each other and to herself,” the family wrote in the tribute.
A Harvard graduate, Affleck also spent a large part of her life involved in civil rights movements. During Freedom Summer — a 1964 summer initiative aimed at raising awareness around violence against the Black community and increasing voter registration and political participation — Affleck got involved, teaching literacy classes, according to the obituary. An active participant in 1960s counterculture, Affleck also marched against the Vietnam War, the tribute said.
The family wrote in the obituary that Affleck’s unique, revolutionary spirit was present in her life since childhood.
“From the beginning of her life, Chris made her unconventional name her own, foreshadowing both the personality and the practicality that would follow her to her death,” the obituary said.
Affleck, the commemoration said, grew up idolizing her stepfather Sam, who was a World War II veteran and a civil rights supporter. During her years at all-girls private school Nightingale-Bamford, Affleck “made the most of an elite education while remaining skeptical of the tightly cloistered world it represented,” the obituary said.
In one particular instance, the obituary said, a teacher had chastised Affleck for her criticism of Jim Crow — the laws and policies that enforced racial segregation primarily from 1877 to the mid-1960s — without hearing the “other side.”
“She slipped down to a payphone to ask Woolworth’s whether they really did turn Black customers away,” the family wrote, referencing the now-defunct chain retail store. “That was Chris: always willing to acknowledge that she might be wrong and never letting that uncertainty be an excuse for inaction.”
She also had a sense of humor, proudly wearing a typo from her first email address that dubbed her “Chritopher” and embraced it twenty years, the obituary said.
Later on, it was Affleck’s five grandchildren — Indiana, 22, Violet, 20, Atticus, 18, Fin, 17, and Sam, 12 — that became the “animating force” in her life, the family said in the obituary.
“Chris was suitably proud of her descendants’ achievements, but she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority,” the tribute said.
Affleck, who retired in 2008, remained involved in advocacy and organizing. She volunteered on the Barack Obama campaign trail, the obituary said. Shortly afterwards, she traveled to Palestine and, upon her return, became an organizer with the coalition group Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine, the family wrote. She was also a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape Project in Truro, Massachusetts.
“When her granddaughter’s student activist group needed a space for trainings, she invited them to Truro and attended every single workshop herself, taking notes,” the obituary said.
Even after her diagnosis, Affleck continued her social justice work, the commemoration pointed out.
“She called her friend, Josh Laub, to take oral histories of his time as a principal in the South Bronx,” the obituary said.
Ben Affleck has previously opened up about his love for his mother, sharing in an interview with Vanity Fair that he and friend and fellow actor Matt Damon were intent on bringing their beloved moms to their first Academy Awards experience in 1998. While Ben Affleck said that some felt the moment was quite unique, he told the outlet that bringing his loved one to the Oscars felt like a natural choice.
“We were sitting next to our moms and we won, and we kind of hugged our moms,” Affleck told the magazine. “And I remember, how everyone had made such a big thing out of it. As if this was such a novelty.”
“And I remember thinking, being insecure, like, ‘Why? Why is it weird that we’re bringing our moms?’” he continued. “Like, ‘Who else do you think we would bring?’ You know what I mean?”
Affleck added that there was “nobody else that was going to go.”
“That was it. Of course our moms were gonna go,” he said. “That really was innocent and not faked.”
