Hip-hop impresario Sean "Diddy" Combs most likely will not face charges in connection with an altercation with a UCLA football coach, an official with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said it will hold an informal proceeding Oct. 15 to decide the best course of action in the case.

Rob Wilcox, spokesman for Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, said the sit down with Combs will help prosecutors determine if they will file charges or, more likely, find alternatives including restitution, anger management or community service.

"It's unlikely that charges will be filed," Wilcox told NBC News. But the ultimate decision will rest with cooperation from Combs.

Attorney Mark Geragos, who is representing Combs, had maintained his client should not be charged and said he was pleased with the decision by the city attorney.

"I'm gratified that yet another prosecutor has examined the evidence and the facts and decided it is not a criminal case," Geragos said, "which is what we said from the get go."

In June, Combs was arrested on suspicion of deadly weapon, battery and making terrorist threats after the June 22 altercation with a UCLA football coach that involved a kettlebell — a large ball with a handle for exercising, usually made from iron. He posted bail and was released from jail hours after he was taken into custody.

Combs' son, Justin, is a defensive back with the UCLA Bruins.

Not long after the arrest, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office declined to file felony charges against Combs and referred the matter to the L.A. City Attorney's Office.

The rap mogul said in a statement that he acted in self defense.
