President Barack Obama on Thursday delivered an impassioned plea reminding voters he is fighting for them despite the “phony scandals” that have dominated headlines for much of his second term.
The president said the recent attacks on his administration have been “all geared towards winning elections or ginning up a base.”
“It’s not on the level and that must feel frustrating,” Obama said at the end of a town hall discussion in Minneapolis. “It makes people cynical and it makes people turned off from the idea that anything can get done.”
Republican House Speaker John Boehner announced this week he would introduce legislation authorizing a lawsuit against President Obama's executive actions. It comes amidst a GOP-led investigation into allegations the IRS targeted conservative groups, a newly formed congressional select committee to investigate the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, and the recent resignation of the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The president lamented that those types of issues have dominated the headlines from Washington, and often drowns out the positive news the White House attempts to highlight.
“You guys are the reason I ran. You’re who I’m fighting for every day and just because it’s not reported in the news, I don't want you to think that I'm not fighting for you,” Obama told the crowd.
