Former Virginia GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli said Tuesday that it "makes sense" for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to resign as the head of the Republican Governor's Association amid the controversies surrounding his administration.
"I think just from the perspective of setting aside this as an issue in other races, it makes sense for him to step aside in that role. He does not serve the goals of that organization by staying as chairman," Cuccinelli said during an appearance on CNN's "Crossfire."
"That doesn't mean any of the charges, political or otherwise, are substantive or not. It doesn't matter, perception is reality," he added.
Cuccinelli narrowly lost his race for governor last year while Christie delivered a landslide victory in the only two governors races of 2013.
Following the closer than expected loss, supporters of the tea party backed Cuccinelli were critical of some mainstream Republicans who sat on the sidelines throughout the contest because they did not want to be tied to the conservative candidate.
