Trump’s immigration crackdown led to drop in U.S. growth rate last year as population hit 342 million

Trump’s crackdown on immigration contributed to a year-to-year drop in the nation’s growth rate as the U.S. population reached nearly 342 million people in 2025, according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The 0.5% growth rate for 2025 was a sharp drop from 2024’s almost 1% growth rate, the highest in two decades, which was fueled by immigration. The 2024 estimates put the U.S. population at 340 million people.

Immigration increased by almost 1.3 million people last year, compared with 2024’s increase of 2.8 million. If trends continue, the gain from immigrants in mid-2026 will drop to only 321,000 people, according to the Census Bureau, whose estimates do not distinguish between legal and illegal immigration.

In the past 125 years, the lowest growth rate was in 2021, during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, when the U.S. population grew by just 0.16%, or 522,000 people, and immigration increased by just 376,000 people because of travel restrictions into the U.S. Before that, the lowest growth rate was just under 0.5% in 1919 at the height of the Spanish flu.

Muslim American group condemns spraying of Omar

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its Minnesota chapter tonight condemned a man's spraying of Omar with an unknown substance during a town hall.

Omar "has been the frequent target of anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant and anti-Somali hate rhetoric," CAIR said in a statement.

"This attack did not happen in a vacuum,” Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR-MN, said in the statement. “We condemn this assault in the strongest possible terms and call for enhanced security for Congresswoman Omar, her family and her community."

Hussein said the incident was predictable amid what he characterized as Omar's being "demonized through false anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric."

Omar was uninjured and carried on speaking at the event, a town hall organized to discuss the federal immigration crackdown in the Twin Cities region. The man was booked on suspicion of third-degree assault, police said.

“We commend Rep. Omar for her courage in continuing to speak out for justice here and abroad, despite the hate and threats she has faced for doing so," CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said.

Omar response after spray attack: I won't 'let bullies win'

After a spraying attack tonight at her town hall event in Minneapolis, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., says she won't back down to bullies.

“During her town hall, an agitator tried to attack the Congresswoman by spraying an unknown substance with a syringe," her office said on X.

"She continued with her town hall because she doesn’t let bullies win.”

Minneapolis police said in a statement that a person who lunged at her with “a syringe to spray an unknown liquid" had been arrested.

Omar's office said she was OK.

"I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work," she wrote on social media.

She expressed gratitude to her "incredible constituents who rallied behind me," adding, "Minnesota strong."

Cellphone video verified by NBC News shows a man charging and lunging at Omar. It’s not clear what the liquid was. No injuries were reported.

CBP team 'may not have followed' protocol, Stephen Miller says

White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller tonight said that the CBP team “may not have been following” instructions in Minneapolis as questions about the fatal shooting of Pretti remained.

“The White House provided clear guidance to DHS that the extra personnel that had been sent to Minnesota for force protection should be used for conducting fugitive operations to create a physical barrier between the arrest teams and the disruptors,” Miller said in a statement.

“We are evaluating why the CBP team may not have been following that protocol,” said Miller, the deputy chief of staff for policy.

The White House and DHS did not immediately respond to requests for more details about the protocols tonight.

In tonight’s statement, Miller also appeared to blame CBP accounts for widely criticized initial statements about the shooting of Pretti.

“The initial statement from DHS was based on reports from CBP on the ground,” he said.

Miller said Saturday on X that “a would-be assassin tried to murder federal law enforcement.”

Videos of the incident have stood in stark contrast to that claim and other claims by DHS.

"Minneapolis Police Officers working at a planned event observed a man use a syringe to spray an unknown liquid onto US Representative Ilhan Omar," the police department said.

“While we don’t agree on everything, these meetings were a productive starting point and I look forward to more conversations with key stakeholders in the days ahead,” Homan said on X.

“President Trump has been clear: he wants American cities to be safe and secure for law-abiding residents — and they will be,” Homan added.

GOP senators call for Noem's resignation

Sens. Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski called for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign, making them the first Republicans in Congress to say she should step down.

Tillis, R-N.C., said Noem’s actions reflected “amateurish assistant-manager-sort of thought processes,” calling them “unacceptable” for someone in a Cabinet-level position.

Tillis, who is not running for re-election in 2026, has shown a willingness to break with the administration more than other GOP lawmakers in the past. Murkowski, R-Alaska, has similarly voiced frustration with the White House’s actions this term.

2 officers fired during Pretti clash, DHS says in initial report

The Department of Homeland Security sent an initial report to Congress detailing Pretti's fatal shooting, saying two officers fired their guns during the struggle, according to a copy of the report obtained by NBC News.

The report, from a Customs and Border Protection internal investigation led by the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility, was sent to congressional committees, including the House Homeland Security and Judiciary committees, according to three sources.

The report says that during the encounter, an officer yelled “He’s got a gun!” multiple times and then, “approximately five seconds later, a BPA discharged his CBP-issued Glock 19 and a CBPO also discharged his CBP-issued Glock 47 at Pretti.”

It’s unclear from the report whether the bullets from both officers' guns hit Pretti.

Judge says 5-year-old detained in Minnesota can't be moved

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order today that blocks the Trump administration from removing a 5-year-old boy who was detained by immigration authorities in Minnesota last week.

Liam Conejo Ramos was taken with his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, after the pair returned home Jan. 20 from Liam’s preschool, according to Zena Stenvik, the superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools.

The Department of Homeland Security said Conejo Arias fled from agents who approached his car, leaving Liam. “For the child’s safety, one of our ICE officers remained with the child while the other officers apprehended Conejo Arias,” DHS said.

Both Liam and his father were moved from Minnesota to Texas, and the restraining order says they are in the Dilley Immigration Processing Center.

Today's order prevents them from being removed or transferred outside the District of Western Texas pending a further directive from the court.

Trump: Bovino is an 'out-there kind of guy'

Trump called Gregory Bovino, the former public face of his immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, an “out-there kind of guy.”

“Bovino is very good, but he’s a pretty out-there kind of guy. And in some cases, that’s good. Maybe it wasn’t good here,” Trump told Fox News today about Bovino, who lost his “commander” title this week.

Trump said that Bovino’s exit and the expected withdrawal of agents from Minneapolis are not a “pullback” but that “it’s a little bit of a change.”

Trump avoids calling Pretti 'domestic terrorist,' sidestepping language used by Stephen Miller

Trump avoided calling Pretti a “domestic terrorist” when he was asked whether he agreed with that assessment, which some administration officials have made, including White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.

“I haven’t heard that,” Trump said of Pretti as he spoke to reporters at a restaurant in Urbandale, Iowa. “But certainly shouldn’t have been carrying a gun.”

Trump added that everyone in the room, who included members of the GOP Iowa congressional delegation, viewed Pretti’s shooting as “a very unfortunate incident.”

“Everyone, unless you’re a stupid person, very, very unfortunate incident. I don’t like that he had a gun. I don’t like that. He had two fully loaded magazines. That’s a lot of bad stuff. And despite that, I say that’s very unfortunate,” Trump said.

Asked about the Border Patrol leadership shakeup in Minneapolis, in which border "czar" Tom Homan will replace the embattled Gregory Bovino, Trump said he shakes up teams “all the time.”

“Everybody here, there’s a lot of owners of farms and places, and you shake up your team if they can’t do the crops fast enough,” Trump said, referring to the Iowa farmers at his event.

ICE releases man arrested in Minnesota after judge threatens to hold acting ICE director in contempt

A man was released from immigration detention in Minnesota, his attorney said today, after a federal judge threatened to hold the acting director of ICE in contempt for flouting court orders related to the man’s case.

Chief U.S District Judge Patrick Schiltz of Minnesota ordered acting ICE Director Todd Lyons yesterday to appear in court Friday to answer questions in the case of Juan Tobay Robles, whom federal immigration agents arrested in Minnesota in early January.

Tobay Robles’ attorney, Graham Ojala-Barbour, told NBC News this afternoon that the U.S. attorney’s office in Minneapolis informed him that his client had been released and is in Texas. Ojala-Barbour said he hadn’t directly heard from Tobay Robles since he was freed.

His release would mean Lyons won’t be required to testify in a Minneapolis courtroom Friday, as Schiltz had ordered.

Frey says he 'appreciated' conversation with Homan

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that he "appreciated" his meeting with Tom Homan, the White House's border "czar," and that the city would continue communicating with him.

Frey said his main request was for the federal immigration operation in the city, Operation Metro Surge, to end as quickly as possible. He also said the city would not enforce federal immigration laws.

"Public safety works best when it’s built on community trust — not tactics that create fear or division," Frey said. "I shared with Mr. Homan the serious negative impacts this operation has had on Minneapolis and surrounding communities, as well as the strain it has placed on our local police officers."

Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., had brought forward a resolution to impeach Noem, which has garnered 162 co-sponsors as of today.

Jeffries and Clark also said in their statement that federal agents "who have broken the law must be criminally prosecuted," adding that "paramilitary tactics must cease and desist."

"Taxpayer dollars should be used to make life more affordable for everyday Americans, not kill them in cold blood," they wrote.

Trump says Pretti wasn't acting like an 'assassin,' contradicting adviser's rhetoric

Trump, asked by a reporter today whether he thought Pretti was acting like an "assassin" before he was fatally shot, shook his head and said "no."

"With that being said," he added, "you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. ... It's a very unfortunate incident."

Stephen Miller, one of Trump's top policy advisers, characterized Pretti on X on Saturday as a "would-be assassin."

Pretti was armed before his fatal encounter with Border Patrol, but he did not draw his weapon, according to eyewitness videos recorded at the scene.

House Republican who oversees DHS funding says a 'pivot' to ICE's mission in Minnesota is needed

The House Republican who oversees federal funding for the Department of Homeland Security said today that a "pivot" is needed for ICE's core mission in Minnesota, but he warned against shutting down the government over the recent fatal shootings by federal immigration agents in the state.

Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., who chairs the House Appropriations subcommittee on homeland security, said in a statement that ICE should be prioritizing "the most dangerous criminal aliens and focusing enforcement on individuals who have gone through due process and have final orders of removal."

Amodei said that border czar Tom Homan's deployment to Minnesota, along with several other top administration officials, is "an encouraging indicator that a pivot is happening."

"What we’ve seen in the last 72 hours looks completely different from before, and that shift must continue. I look forward to the shooting investigation results in both instances in a timely manner," he said.

Amodei, however, also accused "local agitators" and politicians in Minnesota of "creating a warzone mentality on the ground."

Addressing Democrats who have voiced opposition to supporting DHS funding without real reforms to ICE, Amodei said it would be "beyond reckless" to shut down FEMA during winter weather and to sideline Secret Service, impede Coast Guard operations and disrupt the TSA.

The House passed the DHS funding bill, authored by Amodei, last week for the current fiscal year and a number of Senate Democrats have said that they plan to vote against the larger government funding package if the DHS bill isn't stripped from it.

Congress must pass government funding by this Friday or risk a government shutdown.

In a brief exchange with reporters today, Trump said he will not ask Noem to step down, praising her for having done a "very good job" amid bipartisan criticism of the administration's response to the Pretti killing.

Trump, who was preparing to board Marine One en route to Iowa, where he is giving a speech on the economy, said he wants to let the investigation into Pretti's death "play out."

When asked if he had a message for Pretti's family, Trump said: "I love all of our people. I love his family, and it's a very sad situation."

Second woman charged with assault on a federal officer after allegedly biting agent

Another woman is facing charges after allegedly biting the finger of a federal immigration enforcement agent Saturday in Minneapolis.

Emily Baierl has been charged with forcibly assaulting a federal officer during the performance of their duties. An affidavit states she allegedly was seen throwing objects at officers — including chemical agents that were initially thrown by federal law enforcement in an effort to move the crowd back from a perimeter that had been set up after Pretti's shooting.

A Border Patrol agent, who, according to the affidavit, was wearing “tactical gear with clear and visible police markings,” then attempted to secure Baierl.

When the Border Patrol agent attempted to remove the mask Baierl was wearing, Baierl allegedly forcibly bit the middle finger on the agent’s right hand, the affidavit states.

The Border Patrol agent was wearing gloves at the time of the incident, but Baierl’s bite was still allegedly able to cause physical injury, the affidavit states.

Baierl was released from custody on her own recognizance. A preliminary hearing date for the case has not been set yet.

Woman charged with assault on a federal officer after biting off the tip of an agent’s finger

A woman is facing charges after allegedly biting off the tip of a finger of a federal immigration enforcement agent during a protest in Minneapolis Saturday morning.

Claire Feng was charged with forcibly assaulting a federal officer in performance of their duties.

According to an affidavit, federal agents witnessed an interaction between protesters and other federal law enforcement at around 9:25 a.m., during which a chemical agent canister was kicked toward the agents.

An arrest was made of the individual who kicked the canister and a melee ensued, the affidavit states. During the arrest, a CBP agent fell to the ground and was tackled by an individual later identified as Feng, the affidavit states.

Agents from HSI tried to pull Feng off the CBP officer, and Feng ended up face down on the ground with her hands underneath her.

The affidavit states that a Customs and Border Protection agent gained control of one of Feng’s arms and reached under her body and across her face to grasp her other hand in an attempt to secure Feng’s second arm, according to the affidavit. “Feng then forcibly bit the right ring finger of the Victim,” the affidavit states.

“The Victim was extremely cold, and the Victim’s vision was distorted due to wearing a gas mask. As a result, the Victim was not aware of the severity of Feng’s bite but knew he was injured,” the affidavit states. “The Victim then removed his glove and noticed the tip of his right ring finger had been bitten off by Feng from the nailbed, leaving his bone exposed.”

The affidavit indicates the victim found the tip of his finger inside his glove and was able to get medical attention almost an hour after the incident occurred.

Feng was released from custody on her own recognizance by a federal judge. A preliminary hearing date has yet to be set.

Rep. Ilhan Omar to hold town hall amid war of words with Trump

The town hall comes a day after Trump said the Justice Department and Congress are "looking at" Omar, a vocal progressive critic of the president who has frequently been in his crosshairs. Trump's administration is investigating massive fraud in Minnesota, which the president has said is "at least partially responsible for the violent, organized protests going on in the streets."

Omar has denied any wrongdoing and accused the president of "deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories about me."

Biden says Minneapolis violence 'betrays our most basic values'

Former President Joe Biden on Tuesday condemned the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, and praised Minnesotans for "speaking out against injustice when they see it."

"What has unfolded in Minneapolis this past month betrays our most basic values as Americans," Biden said in a three-paragraph post on X. "We are not a nation that guns down our citizens in the street. We are not a nation that allows our citizens to be brutalized for exercising their constitutional rights. We are not a nation that tramples the 4th Amendment and tolerates our neighbors being terrorized."

The former Democratic president said Minnesotans protesting the federal government's immigration crackdown have "reminded us what it is to be American, and they have suffered enough at the hands of this Administration."

Biden did not mention Trump by name, but he alluded to the president, saying in part: "No single person can destroy what America stands for and believes in, not even a President, if we — all of America — stand up and speak out."

In closing, Biden called for "full, fair and transparent investigations" in the fatal shootings of Good and Pretti "as we all mourn their senseless deaths."

Here's where senators stand on addressing the shooting

A dozen Senate Republicans have called for an investigation into Pretti's killing in Minneapolis. This includes Sens. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania, Katie Britt of Alabama, Jerry Moran of Kansas and Mike Crapo of Idaho.

Across the aisle, 11 Senate Democrats have called for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be fired, impeached or to resign. The group includes Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Alex Padilla of California.

A group of Senate Democrats, too, has said they will vote against an appropriations package if it includes DHS funding. If the appropriations package does not pass by the end of the month, the government will enter a partial shutdown.

Minnesota federal judge orders acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to appear in court

Chief Judge Patrick Schilz has ordered acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to appear in federal court to explain why a detainee was not given a bond hearing or released from detention in Minnesota.

Schilz had ordered the Trump administration to either give the detainee, named "Juan," a bond hearing or let him go following his arrest this month in Minnesota.

"The Court’s patience is at an end,” Schilz said. “The Court acknowledges that ordering the head of a federal agency to personally appear is an extraordinary step, but the extent of ICE’s violation of court orders is likewise extraordinary, and lesser measures have been tried and failed.”

The judge said he will hold a hearing Friday at 1:00 p.m. local time in Minneapolis, where Lyons "must appear in person to show cause why he should not be held in contempt for violating the Court’s January 14, 2026, order."

If the parties file a notice before the hearing indicating that Juan has been released from custody, the court will cancel the hearing and will not require Lyons to appear, Schilz said.

"This fundraiser is intended to support the loved ones he leaves behind with immediate and ongoing needs. Because details are still unfolding, and to ensure the money goes to the right person, funds will not be distributed until we can verify next-of-kin and identify the appropriate family representative to manage anything raised," the page said.

The page added that if Pretti's next of kin can't be identified, the funds will go to the Immigrant Defense Project, "a nonprofit that provides litigation, advocacy, and community-defense resources to help immigrants defend their rights and fight deportation."

First lady Melania Trump calls for 'unity' in Minnesota

First lady Melania Trump has called for "unity" amid the ongoing protests and federal immigration operations in Minnesota, during which two people have been fatally shot.

Asked about the tensions in Minneapolis while appearing on "Fox and Friends" this morning, she said: "We need to unify. I'm calling for unity. I know my husband, the president, had a great call yesterday with the governor and the mayor, and they're working together to make it peaceful and without riots. I'm against the violence."

Melania Trump also urged protesters to "protest in peace." Local groups have organized peaceful protests involving thousands of people in recent weeks. Vice President JD Vance said in a speech in Minneapolis last week that the protesters there had been "mostly peaceful."

Investigators are reviewing body-camera videos from immigration agents in the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed to NBC News.

Homeland Security investigators have videos recorded by cameras worn by multiple agents, department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said.

The agents involved in the Pretti shooting were part of the Border Patrol Tactical Unit, a specialized force, McLaughlin said. Two law enforcement officials told NBC News that the unit has more body-worn cameras.

Pretti was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Saturday, the city’s second fatal shooting by a federal officer this month amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration in Minnesota.

The fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol over the weekend has Donald Trump “concerned” about the sustainability of his administration’s ongoing Minneapolis operations, according to Trump administration officials and allies.

These individuals acknowledged to NBC News that they needed a strategic shift amid a public uproar over Pretti’s killing, though the White House is still very much focused on its original agenda of cracking down on immigration and fraud.

Still, the changes made yesterday are noticeable. Saturday’s shooting has prompted a leadership shakeup, a reduction of agents in the city, a reset with key Democratic officials in the state and an attempt to distance the president from some of the more extreme comments from some of his top advisers.

“The visuals were not playing well. He understands TV. … He saw it for himself,” said a Republican lawmaker who, like others in this article, was granted anonymity to speak candidly.
