House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has tapped Rep. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) to head the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign group charged with electing Democrats to the United States House.
At a press conference Monday, Pelosi called Lujan "a dynamic and forward-looking leader with the fresh energy and ideas that House Democrats need for victory in 2016."
At 42 years old, Lujan will inject some youth into the House Democratic leadership heading into the 2016 election cycle. He also becomes the first Latino to head the DCCC.
The Washington Post first reported Lujan as Pelosi's pick for the job.
Also Monday, Pelosi formally announced that outgoing DCCC chair Steve Israel will serve in a newly created position to manage policy and communications. Reps. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut and Donna Edwards of Maryland will also serve as heads of House Democrats' policy and steering panel.
