Former President George H.W. Bush on Monday endorsed Georgia Republican Senate candidate David Perdue over the head of his nonprofit service organization, Democrat Michelle Nunn.

“I have lost any confidence in the current Senate leadership, and believe David Perdue will be an independent voice for Georgia while working for positive solutions to our toughest challenges,” Bush said in a statement.

Bush had previously said he would support the GOP nominee in the tightly contested race, despite Nunn’s work as the CEO of Bush’s nonprofit Points of Light. Nunn has been on leave since announcing her candidacy.

Democrats see Nunn, the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn, as one of the party’s few opportunities to win take a Senate seat from Republicans in November.
