On the same day that House Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation, a whopping 72 percent of Republican primary voters said they were dissatisfied with his and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s ability to achieve GOP goals, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
That includes 44 percent of GOP primary voters who said they were "very" dissatisfied with Boehner and McConnell, and 36 percent who want them immediately removed from their leadership positions.
These poll results -- conducted Sunday through Thursday -- come as Boehner announced on Friday morning his resignation as speaker, effective on Oct. 30.
According to the poll, 28 percent of GOP primary voters said they were "somewhat dissatisfied" with Boehner's and McConnell's ability to achieve Republican goals and priorities, while 44 percent said they were "very dissatisfied."
By contrast, 21 percent were "somewhat satisfied" and just 2 percent were "very satisfied."
And asked if they wanted Boehner and McConnell to be removed immediately for their leadership positions, 36 percent of GOP voters said yes, versus 18 percent who said no. Forty-five percent had no opinion.
The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted Sept. 20-24. These results among 230 Republican primary have a margin of error of plus-minus 6.5 percentage points.
The rest of the NBC/WSJ poll will be released on Sunday and Monday.
