The Army War College revoked Democratic Sen. John Walsh's master's degree from their institution Friday after they determined that he plagiarized a 2007 paper while studying there.

According to college spokeswoman Carol Kerr, after a review of the paper by an Academic Review Board, "The board found that then Colonel John Walsh did commit the offense of plagiarism and thus his Master's Degree and status as graduate of the US Army War College should be revoked."

Walsh's plagiarism was first reported by the New York Times in July, and as a result, Walsh dropped out of Montana's Senate race but decided not to resign until his term was finished.

In a statement Friday, Walsh admitted for the first time to the plagiarism, but reiterated that he will continue to serve "through the end of this term."

"Though I disagree with the findings made by the War College, I accept its decision with great humility and respect for the U.S. Military," Walsh said. "I apologize to all Montanans for the plagiarism in my 2007 paper, and I am prepared to live with its consequences."

Walsh was notified that his degree had been revoked Friday morning and his name was removed from a bronze plaque on campus that lists the institution's graduates, Kerr said.
