President Barack Obama on Friday lauded a new jobs report that showed a drop in the nation’s unemployment rate and an increase in job growth, saying the decisions made by his administration have resulted in the positive economic growth.

“This progress that we have been making, it’s been hard. It goes in fits and starts,” Obama said at a manufacturing plant in Indiana. “It has not always been perfectly smooth or as fast as we want but it is real, it is steady and it is happening.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics report found the unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 percent, marking the first time it has been below 6 percent since 2008. Employers also added 248,000 jobs last month, which was higher than expected.

Obama said American workers, employers are to thank for the news, as are “some decisions we made pretty early on in my administration.”

Yesterday the president delivered a speech attempting to highlight the bright spots in the economy ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
