WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, plans to spend election night at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington, according to three people familiar with the planning.

One source said the campaign is likely to hold its election night event in the Quad, though the exact location on campus could change.

NBC News has reported that Harris’ campaign was eyeing the university, where Harris obtained her bachelor’s degree, as a potential venue for her election night headquarters.

Harris' roots at the historically Black college run deep. In a letter published this month by The Hilltop, the student newspaper, Harris recalled "so many fond memories" from when she attended the university, which she referred to by its nickname, "The Mecca."

"I recognize my time at Howard shaped me into the person I am today. At Howard, we learn that we have the capacity to be great and also that we have the responsibility to work hard to live up to that potential each day,” Harris wrote.

She also pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first historically Black sorority, at Howard in 1986.

Republican nominee Donald Trump’s campaign said it will host an election night watch party at a convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he also has a resort. The campaign has not announced Trump's election night plans.

Harris does not campaign in Washington very often. The news of her election night plans comes the day she was scheduled to deliver remarks on the Ellipse near the White House.

In her speech Tuesday night, Harris is expected to urge Americans to "turn the page" on her Republican rival, a senior Harris campaign official has told NBC News. Trump addressed his supporters at the Ellipse shortly before the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
