Is Scott Walker walking back his suggestion on Sunday that building a wall or fence on the U.S.-Canadian border is a “legitimate issue”?
It sure looks that way.
In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Walker was asked about ridicule he’s received from GOP rivals on possibly building a wall on the northern border. Here's his answer:
"People should go back and actually watch what I said on Sunday. I didn't say that at all. I talked about listening to people at some events we had, some campaign events -- one of which was someone who had been involved, I believe, in the past in local law enforcement. And he raised a question about personnel for the federal government assisting people in those counties along the northern borders of the United States. He talked about personnel, and I said it's a legitimate issue to look to make sure that there’s enough staff working with those local law enforcement professionals.
I've never talked about a wall up in the north, I'm certainly not now. That's just what happens when things get run amok."
But here’s what Walker said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
Chuck: We are talking about the southern border and building a fence there. We don't talk about the northern border, where this is about securing the border from potential terrorists coming over.
Walker: Well....
Chuck: Do you want to build a wall north of the border?
Walker: “Some people have asked us about that in New Hampshire. They raised some very legitimate concerns, including some law enforcement folks that brought that up to me at one of our town hall meetings about a week and a half ago. So that is a legitimate issue for us to look at.”
