Jon Stewart gave up his hosting gig at "The Daily Show" earlier this month after spending 16 years poking fun at politicians.

And now thousands of fans want him to get back to work — as a presidential debate moderator.

A petition on the website Change.org is on its way to garnering the 200,000 votes needed to forward it to theCommission on Presidential Debates, the nonprofit that organizes the events.

The petition is touting Stewart's experience interviewing elected officials — including President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton — as a reason for giving him the license to grill candidates in the upcoming 2016 election.

"Mr. Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the United States Cabinet, 32 members of the United States Senate, 7 members of the United States House of Representatives, and scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news," the petition reads.

Stewart has been mum about his next career move, although he's on board to host WWE's SummerSlam show on Sunday.

At least one presidential candidate, former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, thinks a Stewart-sanctioned debate is a good idea.

The petition's creator believes the block of signatures can have an influence: "In 2012, three concerned high school students started a petition on Change.org asking the Commission on Presidential Debates to select a female moderator for a presidential debate. It garnered over 180,000 signatures, and won!"

The commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the petition.
