Likely Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said Tuesday that he misinterpreted a question about his support for the Iraq War, saying he is unsure whether he would have made the same decision as his brother President George W. Bush knowing what we do 12 years later.
"I don't know what that decision would have been, that’s a hypothetical. But the simple fact is that mistakes were made," Bush said on the Sean Hannity radio show.
Bush confused even his allies in the Republican party when he said in an interview Monday he would have authorized the invasion into Iraq after knowing what he knows now. No major weapons of mass destruction were found in the country, even though their existence was a selling point for the war.
"I would have [authorized the invasion], and so would have Hillary Clinton, just to remind everybody," Bush told Fox News' Megyn Kelly.
That answer prompted speculation that Bush had misheard the question, which he confirmed Tuesday.
"I interpreted the question wrong, I guess," Bush said. "I was talking about: Given what people knew then, would you have done it? Rather than, knowing what we know now. And knowing what we know now, clearly there were mistakes."
