Among the many historical documents found on OurDocuments.gov is the program for the 1963 March on Washington, which featured several civil rights leaders, including the most recognizable name of all: Martin Luther King Jr.
The idea for the demonstration was conceived by civil rights activist A. Philip Randolph, who also made opening remarks at the Aug. 28 event. Reportedly, the march was planned in just two months by Randolph's associate, Bayard Rustin, who organized the entire day's itinerary with a staff of 200 volunteers from their headquarters in Harlem, N.Y., and a smaller office in Washington, D.C.
