This winter was one for the record books – snowstorms, icy cold, and as you may have suspected, flight cancellations. There were more flights cancelled during the first three months of 2014 than at any time in the past 20 years. According to the Department of Transportation, U.S. airlines scrapped 4.6 percent of their flights.
While the weather is mostly to blame, airlines are also reacting to new government regulations about wait times on the tarmac, prohibiting carriers from keeping passengers on the runway for three hours or more. Potential fines for delays on the tarmac? Up to $27,500 per passenger.
Here’s hoping that escaping to warmer locales will be a little easier next year.
