1. Malfunctioning ATM Spits Out $37,000 for Homeless Man
It’s a scenario you’ve dreamed about: you walk up to an ATM to withdraw a little money, but instead it starts spitting out thousands. That’s exactly what happened to a South Portland, Maine, man. He wanted $140, but instead got $37,000. Unfortunately, in this case, all good things come to an end. A woman behind him called police because he was spending an “unusual amount of time” at the ATM she was waiting to use. Officers forced him to give the money back, but no charges were pressed. The bank is blaming a “code error.”
2. Mozilla CEO Steps Down Amid Gay Marriage Controversy
Brendan Eich, the co-founder and CEO of Mozilla, has resigned following a firestorm of criticism regarding his opposition to gay marriage. The businessman made a $1,000 donation in 2008 supporting California’s Proposition 8, an initiative to ban gay marriage. In a statement, Eich said he would be taking some time before making his next career move. While many disagree with Eich’s view on same-sex marriage, others say that the way he was forced to resign was an attack on his right to personal political views. 3. Michael Schumacher Has ‘Moments of Consciousness’
Good news from Formula 1 racing champion Michael Schumacher: his agent says he is “making progress" and has "moments of consciousness and awakening.” Schumacher, 45, suffered a severe head trauma during a skiing accident in the French Alps about three months ago. Since then, he’s been in a medically-induced coma. Schumacher is a seven-time champion who retired in 2012 after a 19-year career.
4. Facebook Photo Saves 3-Year-Old’s Eye
Tara Taylor says a Facebook post kept her 3-year-old daughter from going blind. Taylor posted a picture of her little girl, Rylee, who appeared to have red eye from the camera’s flash. But some eagle-eyed friends noticed something else: Rylee’s left eye was actually glowing yellow – a sign of the rare Coates disease. They alerted Tara, and now little Rylee is getting the treatment she needs.
5. Barbara Bush Is Not a Morning Person
Barbara Bush lived up to her family nickname “The Enforcer” during an appearance on the TODAY show this morning to offer the final word on the quality of her son George’s paintings. She approved of W’s rendition of her husband, Bush 41, but when asked if she’d sit for a portrait she was less than obliging. “Absolutely not. It might look like me,” she quipped. The segment lasted only a few minutes, and as Mrs. Bush was being ushered off the air she got in one last sassy jab: “I got up at 4:30 a.m. for this?” Looks like the former first lady is most definitely not an early bird.
6. 'Breaking Bad' Lives On
For those of you still mourning the loss of Walter White, this news may offer you some relief: Bryan Cranston is penning a memoir about his “Breaking Bad” years and promises to “tell the stories of [his] life and reveal the secrets and lies that [he] lived with for six years shooting ‘Breaking Bad.’” Here’s to hoping Cranston is as good at writing as Walter White was as cooking meth. The book will be published in fall of 2015.
