The president of Yemen resigned Thursday under pressure from Shiite rebels who had imprisoned him in his own home.
President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, an ally of the United States in the fight against al Qaeda, submitted his resignation to parliament, presidential officials told The Associated Press.
Military officials told the AP that the president resigned after rejecting demands from the rebels for appointments throughout the government. The rebels, known as the Houthis, seized the Yemeni capital in September.
