Milford Sound on the South Island of New Zealand is the rainiest inhabited place in the country, and one of the rainiest spots in the world.
Melissa Wydogen and her fiance were on a road trip last March when they found a trail to meander before the sun set. A break in the clouds revealed Mitre Peak, which rises to 5,551 feet above the sound.
"My fiance and I happened to be alone in that area, which made the setting all the more stunning," she told TODAY.com. "The next morning we woke up to rain, so we were happy to have caught that moment."
The next day they went kayaking amid the rain, which creates hundreds of waterfalls pouring off the surrounding cliffs. "It's an awe-inspiring place; you feel so insignificant in midst of it's dramatic beauty," Wydogen said.
