During a weekend outing in southern Oregon last September, Mark Walton headed to the Upper North Umpqua River in Oregon. He spotted these falls in a heavily wooded area just off Route 138.

To blur the water's flow, he set his camera on a tripod and exposed the shot for two seconds.

Whitehorse Falls is one of 11 along this section of the river, most of which are a short hike away on maintained trails.

Walton calls himself an advanced amateur photographer, but his father, grandfather and great-grandfather all earned a living behind the lens. During World War II, his grandfather was the head photographer at Camp Adair, Ore., and also did work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, N.M.
