KABUL, Afghanistan — Four Taliban suicide bombers killed at least 22 officers when they stormed the dining room of a police headquarters in Afghanistan on Tuesday, an official told NBC News.
The militants attacked the site in Logar province while dozens of officers were having lunch at around noon local time (2:30 a.m. ET), the provincial governor's spokesman Din Mohammad Darwish told NBC News.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack on his Twitter feed.
The first suicide bomber detonated at the gates of the compound killing two guards, two others exploded at checkpoints inside the building and the fourth detonated inside the dining hall, according to Darwish.
Reuters said the attack triggered a 25-minute battle with police. It was the latest to target Afghan security forces following the withdrawal of most foreign combat troops at the end of last year.
