A Taiwanese fishing boat with 49 people aboard has been missing in the South Atlantic for almost two weeks, officials said. The captain of the Xiang Fu Chun, a 700-ton squid-fishing vessel, reported in his last communication on February 26 that the ship was taking on water about 1,000 miles off Argentina, Taiwan’s Fisheries Agency said.
Despite launching a search immediately after the ship lost contact, authorities said that no trace of the boat had been found. The Fisheries Agency said it had asked Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to talk with countries near the search area for assistance. Three Taiwanese vessels are also involved in the search, it said. Among those on board the vessel were 21 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 from mainland China, two Taiwanese and two Vietnamese, according to Saturday's statement.
