The Obama campaign released a new 30-second ad today responding to Mitt Romney's claims that as president he would stop the federal subsidy to PBS.
Romney's comments came last week during the first presidential debate as he spoke to debate moderator Jim Lehrer, prompting writer Suzi Parker to proclaim "Big Bird Will Haunt Mitt Romney."
"I’m sorry Jim. I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m gonna stop other things. I like PBS; I like Big Bird; I actually like you too," Romney said.
Since then Big Bird has, pardon the pun, loomed somewhat large in the political discourse. He even turned up on "Saturday Night Live" during "Weekend Update."
However, Sesame Street isn't amused, and the program is asking the Obama campaign to pull down the attack ad. In a brief statement released today, the Sesame Workshop writes:
Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.
