SEOUL — North Korea has fired two short range missiles into the sea off of its east coast, South Korean defense officials told NBC News on Sunday.

No other details were immediately available but the defense ministry said it would issue a statement later today.

South Korea media outlets MBN and Yonhap said that the missiles were likely of the 500-kilometer range variety.

The revelation comes after North Korea fired four short-range missiles over the sea off its eastern coast last week.

The launches are being seen as a provocation in reaction to ongoing joint military drills between the U.S. and South Korea.
