Three climbers have died on Mount Everest in as many days, according to officials, marking a deadly start to the season on the world's highest peak.
Wangchu Sherpa of Trekking Camp Nepal told Reuters on Monday that Subash Paul, a 43-year-old mountaineer, died from exhaustion while descending the summit.
A Dutch man and an Australian woman died from what appeared to be altitude sickness over the weekend, according to Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association. He said two other Indian climbers were missing.
And a fourth person — a 25-year-old Nepali Sherpa guide — fell to his death Thursday from near the top of neighboring Lhotse, itself the fourth-highest mountain in the world, Agence France-Presse and The Times of India reported.
At least 19 people were killed at Mount Everest base camp last year in an avalanche triggered by Nepal's devastating earthquake.
