KABUL — A large explosion near Afghanistan's main airport rocked the capital city early Sunday, killing at least three people and injuring nearly two dozen others, including children.
Two military vehicles were damaged, a senior security official told NBC News, but it was not immediately clear if any military personnel were harmed.
Among the dead was a member of the European Union police mission (EUPOL) in Afghanistan, which is training local forces, it said in a short statement.
The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the suicide attack in a statement that said the target of the attack had been U.S. forces. It also claimed an inflated figure for the number of casualties.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, which includes thousands of American troops, could not confirm if any foreign soldiers were injured in the attack. "We are gathering information," an ISAF spokesperson told NBC News.
A British embassy spokesman in Kabul later confirmed to Reuters that a British national was among the dead but could give no other details.
A police officer at the scene described the area where the explosions took place as very crowded during the morning. "The injured are being taken to hospital, I don't have the exact numbers, but many people killed and injured."
Police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi told Reuters that the other two victims were civilian bystanders.
