LG has announced that it has developed the world’s largest OLED TV panel, which the company will have on display at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) TV panel is reportedly 55 inches in diameter, and has a higher contrast ratio and wider color gamut than LCD TVs.
“Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now,” Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO and executive vice-president of LG Display, said in a statement. “LG Display's 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers."
LG overcame the cost hurdle by adopting a different technology for its display. While smaller OLED displays typically employ what’s known as Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS), which uses amorphous silicon, the new 55-inch panel has Oxide Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology, which uses the much cheaper oxide. The company said that Oxide TFT produces the same image quality of high performance LTPS but at a significantly reduced cost.
Of course, LG hasn’t given a cost estimate for the new TV just yet.
Another technology called white OLED allows the display to have “a lower error rate, higher productivity, and a clearer Ultra Definition screen via the benefits of small pixels” than traditional LCD displays, the company said. And given that it's OLED, the display consumes less power than an LCD of the same size by turning diodes on and off as needed, rather than keeping light sources on at all times.
All of these features are packed into a casing that’s thinner than a pen and lighter than conventional LCD panels.
