TEL AVIV — Israeli soldiers shot and injured a female Palestinian on Wednesday after receiving reports she was approaching an Israeli settlement in the West Bank armed with a knife, the Israeli military said.
The Israel Defense Forces said its soldiers called for her to stop and fired warning shots in the air as she approached the Israeli settlement of Yitzhar, around 30 miles north of Jerusalem.
The soldiers shot her after she "failed to comply," before evacuating her from the scene and giving her medical assistance. She was lightly wounded, the IDF told NBC News.
Hours later, one woman was injured in a stabbing attack in the West Bank Israeli settlement of Adam, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said on Twitter. One of the alleged attackers was shot while a second was captured, he added.
The incidents were the latest in weeks of attacks and clashes that have gripped the region. At least eight Israelis have been killed in near-daily stabbing and shootings since the beginning of October. Around 50 Palestinians have been killed, either in clashes with Israeli security forces or in the process carrying out alleged attacks.
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon jetted to the Middle East for a last-minute trip Tuesday, a visit he said "reflects the sense of global alarm" at the worsening situation.
