Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Friday that if their leaders can learn to trust one another, Iran and the U.S. might be able to repair tensions that have boiled ever since the Iranian revolution 35 years ago. Rouhani's remarks came at a news conference at the opening of the U.N. General Assembly amid reports by The Associated Press that President Barack Obama is considering backing off his demand that Iran gut its uranium enrichment program and has proposed that Tehran be allowed to keep almost half of it intact.
"The people of Iran must learn to trust again, and the interlocutors must earn that trust again," Rouhani said shortly before U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met for a second time with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that "at this point, negotiations are ongoing," adding: "We do believe it's critically important for Iran in a way to come into compliance with international standards."
