German Chancellor Angela Merkel fell and injured her pelvis during a skiing holiday in Switzerland, forcing her to cancel several appointments, officials said Monday.
She suffered severe bruises and must use a walking aid but is not in hospital and is able to work from her Berlin home, a government spokesman said.
The accident happened in the region of Engadin in Switzerland just before the New Year, while Merkel was on a short winter vacation.
She has been advised by doctors to rest for the next three weeks and has already canceled a planned trip to Warsaw on Wednesday along with a meeting with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg.
She suffered “an incomplete fracture of the left rear pelvis ring,” her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told German media.
