When Mexico's attorney general, Jesus Murillo Karam, was pounded with questions Friday as he explained what investigators think happened to 43 college students who went missing six weeks earlier, he uttered a phrase that sparked even more anger about the inflammatory case. Shortly after he told the press that the group of students was apparently incinerated by drug gang members, Murillo, seeking to halt inquiries, said, "Ya me canse," or "I've had enough."
Protesters, who have long been outraged by the government's handling of the case, spray painted "I've had enough ... of fear" on the entrance of the attorney general's office overnight. Another group of protesters set the door of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's ceremonial palace ablaze Saturday, according to Reuters.
Frustration over the statement spilled from the streets to the Internet, where #YaMeCanse and #estoycansado, or "I'm tired," started trending on Twitter in Mexico.
Some wrote that if Murillo was so worn out, he should resign. Many social media users said they were tired, too — of injustice and corrupt politicians. At least 74 people have been arrested so far in the case, including the mayor of Iguala and his wife, who have been found to have connections to organized crime.
