MAINZ, Germany – An 8-year-old boy in Germany helped catch his own mother speeding in a school zone, according to police. The woman was caught Thursday outside her son's Duesseldorf elementary school after officers and students set up a speed camera as part of the nation's "Blitz-Marathon" anti-speeding crackdown, a police spokesman told NBC News. The mother, who has not been named, was not the only one left red faced by the campaign: A teacher was caught in a speed trap outside another school.
Germany is famous for its high-speed Autobahn highway, where some stretches do not even have a speed limit. But as part of the annual campaign, police are taking a hard line on speeding, deploying some 13,000 officers at 7,500 checkpoints across the country's highways and roads. One of the gravest violations, police said, was a motorcyclist in shorts who hit nearly 150 mph in a 60 mph zone. He will be hit with a hefty fine and a months-long road ban. Police said the campaign worked and speeds have slowed across Germany.
