The Newtown school shooting tragedy has stirred much debate over gun control laws in the United States. But it’s also raised another question among lawmakers and community members: Do police officers belong in schools?
Many state legislators and residents are eager for funding that will support more in-school officers, like the community of Jordan, Minn., which has already stationed its entire eight-officer police force in local schools, according to The Center for Public Integrity. On the other hand, civil-rights advocates and juvenile court judges argue that the criminal justice system is already too closely involved in matters of student discipline in some areas.
