Actor, screenwriter and director Dax Shepard appeared on Morning Joe to talk about his movie Hit & Run, but the conversation turned toward his personal life for a moment.
Shepard has been engaged to Veronica Mars actress Kristen Bell since January 2010 and when asked by Mika Brzezinski when he expects to officially tie the knot, he said, “When all of our friends in California can also get married,” a reference to gay marriage, which is not legal in California. Shepard followed up his declaration by saying, “We don’t want to have a ceremony that other people can’t have.”
In a February interview with The Advocate, Bell was also quoted as saying, “the reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. That’s why we’ve been so hesitant. Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”
