The once seemingly bipartisan denouncement of Rep. Todd Akin's "legitimate rape" and other comments appears to be dissolving as November approaches and Republicans find themselves eager to cast incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill out of office.
Add Sens. Tom Coburn And Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to his list of supporters.
Akin, who was initially begged by Republican leadership to drop out of the Senate race after his remarks, has picked up endorsements from fellow Republicans after he opted to continue his campaign.
Last week, Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina and former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum issued a joint statement declaring their support for Akin. This week, a Washington, D.C.-fundraiser for Akin's campaign will feature DeMint, as well as Sens. Coburn, Inhofe, Graham, according to the luncheon invitation first reported by Politico.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee reaffirmed that it will not offer financial support to Akin's campaign, because it does not believe it is "winnable," during an interview last week with The Courier-Journal.
Former House speaker and ex-GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee have also lent their support to Akin in recent weeks.
