Sixteen tax judges were among 60 people arrested by police investigating the mafia's infiltration into Italy's court system, the BBC News reported Monday.

Buildings, cars and other property worth more than $1 billion were also seized around Naples and in northern Italy, the BBC said.

The judges are alleged to have taken bribes in exchange for rulings favoring the Camorra crime syndicate in Naples.

Others arrested included eight tax court employees and a prominent lawyer.
