Tropical Storm Cristobal formed early Sunday in the Atlantic, taking aim for the Bahamas after dumping heavy rain on parts of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The storm system packed winds of around 45 miles per hour and is expected to move slowly over the next 36-48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters said Cristobal is not expected to impact the U.S. mainland. The Government of the Bahamas issued a tropical storm warning for the central and southeastern portion of the Bahamas, as well as the Turks and Caicos, according to The Weather Channel. Cristobal, which strengthened from a tropical depression overnight, had previously downed several trees and power lines in Puerto Rico, leaving more than 17,000 people without power and nearly 5,600 without water.
